Ceuta registers a new increase in freight traffic

Good news for our city, and excellent ones for port agencies in Ceutalike ours. Last 9th of December (less than a month from starting the current year 2017), the Salama team learned the latest data provided by Puertos del Estado (State Ports), where it was pointed out that, in 2016, container freight traffic had registered an increase of 37.4% with more than 130,000 tons transported.

What does this mean for our port agency? It means hundreds of operations carried out and coordinated by Salama, both in port and outside (during the so-called off port limit stopovers); where we supply ships with fuel (bunkering), coordinate the crew changes of one or several members, or change specific parts.

Much more than containers

Freight transportation is rebounding again and the data is confirmed with figures as relevant as those recorded last October. During that month, a total of 12,591 tons of goods were moved in containers, a figure that contrasts the 11,312 tons recorded in the month of October 2015.

If we talk about provisioning, the numbers also speak for themselves. Between January and October, food suppling (a large part carried out by Salama) increased by no less than 30.7%. In fact, according to Puertos del Estado, in October alone the supply figures went from 36,807 tons to just over 47,800 (a 30% increase).

When analysing the upward trend in our city’s port activity, we must also take into account the transportation of liquid goods (called liquid bulk cargo). Figures that, as pointed out by the national port authorities, have increased by almost 30% (more than half a million tons of liquid goods).

A downward trend in passenger traffic

In contrast to the excellent figures given by Puertos del Estado (with more than 8,000 boats moored in Ceuta with the help of port agencies such as Salama), there is a downward trend in passengers and vehicles on board. A fact that directly affects Ceuta’s port, but has a lesser impact on agencies such as ours.

In October, passenger traffic fell by 1.07% (139,706, fourteen thousand less than during the same month last year), and vehicle transportation dropped by 2.1%.
