How is the electric motor of a merchant ship repaired?

Although it is generally believed that “size does not matter”, when talking about the repair or rewind of the electric motor of a merchant ship, a tugboat or a cruise ship, the reality is somewhat different. Not only are we talking about a key part of a vessel, but it also has a further disadvantage: its activity takes place under the sea and in a wide, high and deep surface.

The sea, with its currents, its waves and low temperature –especially in the waters of Strait of Gibraltar, where port agencies in Ceuta like Salama operate-, is not precisely one of the best friends of the electronic elements of a vessel.  Do you remember that some months ago we talked about the underwater inspections for ships in Ceuta? This month we are back to our old ways to focus on the soul and heart of the vessel: the motor.

Foreseeing possible problems

We are working on the assumption that our maritime motorway (the one that gives shape to the Strait of Gibraltar) is the busiest in the world. It is a route used by thousands of ships coming from the furthest places of the planet and with thousands of miles to cover. This situation leads to crews trying to foresee possible problems by doing a regular check-out of their ships (including the propellers or the electric motor).

For these check-outs we recommend trusting the workforce and professionalism of an expert and specialised team and of a staff that can work on the surface. What for? To change all the deteriorated parts, to clean the most damaged ones and check the general function and performance of the motor.

But what happens when the electric motor fails without warning? Although it is essential to keep calm, as different problems will be registered on the motor, the most important thing is to look for a port of call that can offer an electric motor repair service for ships, such as Salama.

Once the vessel is moored at the port, the technical team of the port agency checks the motor and looks for the origin of the problem. Once the problem has been detected, the port team will take the necessary measures to ensure that the ship can begin its journey as soon as possible.

What is the rewind of an electric motor?

Another of the problems that may arise on board of a large vessel is the rewind of an electric motor, a more technical and abstract concept for non-experts. What are we referring to?

The rewind of an electric motor of a ship -necessary after the failure of the motor or a specific incident in the electric system of the boat- consists of changing the leading wires that make up the winding of the electric motor for others better preserved. Although it can be an isolated operation, the rewind of the electric motor of a ship is usually done in three different situations: repair, maintenance or improvement of the motor.
