The mega cruise ships Shapphire Princess and Koningsdam rely on Salama on their way through Ceuta

The mega cruise ships Sapphire Princess and Koningsdam, from the renowned Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, chose our consignee company in Ceuta last October for a seven and ten-hour stopover, respectively, at the España dock (Eastern side). These impressive ships, 290 and 299 metres in length, docked with approx. 7,000 people, including crew and passengers, most of them British and North American citizens

The Sapphire Princess arrived at this North African port last 2nd of October, after setting sail from Barcelona to Lisbon on a 14-day tourist itinerary, beginning and ending at the British port of Southampton. Its dimensions and tonnage (290 metres in length, 8.5 metres in draft and weighing 115,857 tons) surprised our city, which had not hosted a tourist cruise of such magnitude. The recently renovated ship, docked in Ceuta from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, displaying more than 18 decks and more than 1,300 cabins. During its stopover in the city, the Port Authorities wished to acknowledge the ship’s first stay in the port of Ceuta, and a commemorative plaque was presented to its captain.

The arrival of the Sapphire Princess, consigned by Salama, is another sign of interest by the American shipping company in Ceuta’s facilities, also used recently for other representative ships like the Pacific Princess and the Ocean Prince. The Sapphire Princess is scheduled to return to the city twice during the year 2019.

On the 11th of October, we received the visit of the Koningsdam, another mega ship, while on its way from Cartagena to Cadiz. This meant that the port of Ceuta welcomed the largest cruise ship in its history, since this giant is even larger than the Sapphire Princess. This ship boasts a length of 299.79 metres and a depth of 8.25 metres, more than 1,100 cabins and every facility: a disco, casino, cinema, shopping area, jogging track, etc. This vessel also used the services offered by Salama and was in Ceuta from 1:00 pm until 11:00 pm. During this time, its captain also received a plaque to commemorate its first stopover in Ceuta.

The presence of the Holland America Line ship is a clear reflection of the company's commitment to the port of Ceuta regarding its cruise itineraries, as was confirmed by the visits of the Westerdam and Oosterdam ships.

The fact that these large ships visit the port of Ceuta establish the importance of the city and the Strait of Gibraltar in the cruise industry. The optimal conditions of its facilities, its strategic value and the services offered by reputable consignees such as Salama, are factors well recognized by large vessels, both nationally and internationally.
